FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the purpose of a Periodic Inspection?

Periodic Inspection provides for the safety of persons and livestock against the effects of electric shock and burns, and protection of property against damage. An inspection identifies whether an installation is damaged or has deteriorated. It will also establish any installation defect and non-compliance with Regulations.

Why is it necessary?

Because all electrical installations deteriorate due to wear, overloading, etc. legislation requires that all installations be maintained in a safe condition. Licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies and mortgage lenders may require it.

What legislation refers to it?

Regulation 4(2) of The Electricity at Work Act (1989) and the Memorandum of Guidance published by the Health and Safety Executive. These require that installations meet British Standard BS 7671 as laid out in The IEE Wiring Regulations (16th edition).

Does this apply to my premises?

All electrical wiring installations fall under this legislation whether a private home or a commercial property.

How often should my installation be inspected/tested?

The recommended maximum period varies with the type of premises. For example on a building site it is recommended every three months whereas for a domestic property it is suggested every ten years or upon a change of occupancy (whichever is sooner).

How long does it take to do?

This can vary from a few hours on a domestic premises to several days on a large industrial site.

How will I be affected while the tests and inspections are done?

There will be an interruption to the power supply, and furniture or other obstacles may need to be moved in order to get access to sockets, light fittings, etc. We will keep any disruption to a minimum.

Will I get a report once the inspection is complete?

A report will be provided to the person requesting the inspection. This will include a schedule of Inspections and Test Results and a list of recommended actions to bring the installation up to the current standard.
